DR JOHNSON'S HOUSE
Located just off Fleet Street in the City of London, 17 Gough Square is a remarkably untouched time-capsule from the Age of Enlightenment. With original 17th-century features and an iconic history, this Grade I listed townhouse is a unique venue perfectly located between the City of London and the West End.
Guests will enjoy exclusive use of the House which lends itself to being transformed into your private house for the event, with different set-ups, entertainment or even theming in each of the rooms.
There is a long history of entertaining (Dr Samuel Johnson was a very sociable man!) and the House offers a charming and atmospheric setting for receptions, dining events and product launches. It is also the perfect place for an away day or meeting that requires a unique and beautiful setting. The venue are always happy to discuss requirements for event set-ups and can often accommodate redressing our spaces, adding event furniture, lighting and flowers, to transform the House to your liking.
The elegant Withdrawing Room overlooks Gough Square and retains many original features, including wooden panelling and window seats. With windows on three sides, the gallery room is light-filled on summer evenings, and enchantingly atmospheric on winter nights. It’s the perfect place for champagne and canapes, as well as formal dining.
At the top of the House you will find the garret – where Johnson compiled his dictionary in 1755. More recently, it served as a fire watch station during the Blitz as this was still the tallest building in the area at the time! Overlooking Gough Square, the garret is a lovely space to serve welcome drinks to your guests before progressing to the Withdrawing Room for dinner. It can also be used as a lounge for after dinner cocktails, desserts and music.
